Los Cazadores - Hunting Headquarters & Deer Contest

View From the Pear Flat -- April 2007 Article by Larry Weishuhn

Green has long been my favorite color! It denotes many things including the color of hunting clothes, dollars earned and spent on hunting, and during the spring and early summer an abundance of green vegetation foretells great antler development this coming fall. To put it plainly we’re set for a fall filled with big antlers. We’re also fortunate in that thanks to excellent fawn survival 3 to 5 or so years ago, we have an abundance of older aged bucks. Don’t know about you, I can hardly wait!

As this is being written, the day before Easter, it’s raining once again in South Texas and the temperature is amazingly cool, certainly cooler than I remember any Easter weekend. The weather this morning reminded me much of early fall rather than late spring. I suspect the deer and other wildlife however appreciate the cooler temperature, not unlike you or I do.

The green we’re seeing in ground vegetation, primarily forbs, will provide not only tremendous forage for deer, but will also produce great amounts of seeds which will later be utilized by birds such as quail, doves, turkey and the many, many songbirds which populate our part of Texas.

With the ground moisture up a bit, this might also be a year to plant food plots, with the expectation of actually producing forage in sufficient amounts for deer and other wildlife to utilize. In planting, if you have not already done so, before planting, treat the seed with DeltAg’s Grow Coat. This will cause them to germinate quicker, produce a tremendously large and healthy root stock, which will help with nutrient and water uptake, and produce more quantity and nutritious forage than what can be produced without the application of Grow Coat. This is a product that’s been in the row crop market for about the past 30 or so years and has made the difference of producing a crop that was mildly successful and one that was unbelievably successful.

If you have already planted and want to great increase the food plot’s production, nutrition and palatability; or for that matter do basically the same with native brush species, apply some DeltAg Power Grow, as per directions on the container. You’ll be glad you did and the wildlife that lives on your property will be even happier and healthier!

You may not be aware of it but Los Cazadores is working on some new products, wildlife management products that will help you become more successful in your management program, but also perhaps make you a more successful hunter. This past month Los Cazadores hired Mark Burris to work in the field, promoting Los Cazadores, the Los Cazadores deer feed produced by Moorman’s, and help develop some Los Cazadores products. Mark comes to us with a great amount of feed, feeding, animal nutrition research and background. You will have the opportunity to meet and visit with him at our Los Cazadores Whitetail Hunting Camp and Awards which will take place this year once again in San Antonio at the Joe & Harry Freeman Coliseum on May 19th. The doors to the even will open at 10:00 am. This year we will again have a huge display of the best whitetails taken during the 2006-07 Texas and Mexico hunting season, have numerous interactive seminars, such as the "You Call the Shots" segments seen on the NORTH AMERICAN HUNTER television shows. We’ll also have a special SHE Safari Lady’s Fashion Show. This is one neither ladies nor men will want to miss!

Mark, as mentioned, will be there as will all the Los Cazadores owners and staff, and a fair number of vendors displaying the best hunting and wildlife oriented products made. There will also be some special guest there to answer any questions you might have regarding whitetail hunting and whitetail management.

As we head into the summer watch for some exciting news about the possibility of a "Los Cazadores Outside of Texas and Mexico Whitetail Deer Contest" for those hunters who hunt in other states (both as residents and non-residents) and parts of Canada for whitetails. It will be a deer contest separate from our existing Los Cazadores Deer Contest and have separate rules and regulations (no minimum scores) and separate entry forms and fees (must enter before going hunting). We will present a Los Cazadores Award Jacket for the best whitetail taken in each state by any legal means (archery, rifle, muzzleloader, shotgun, pistol, crossbow for this first year all means to taking will be "lumped" together). We will present one jacket per state, but all hunters with their deer will appear on our www.loscazadores.com website. We will use the same scoring system we employ at Los Cazadores Deer Contest for Texas and Mexico (basically gross score). We will present a limited edition bronze (available only through our deer contest) to the largest whitetail taken (again separate from our existing Los Cazadores Deer Contest for Texas and Mexico) in North America. This comes at the request of the many hunters we have visited with throughout North America. Watch for more details on our www.loscazadores.com website.

So as you can see things are "hopping" here at Los Cazadores. Not many tales are being told, as we prepare for the Los Cazadores Whitetail Hunting Camp and Awards 2007 (remember at the Joe & Harry Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio, on the 19th of May) an additional contest, new products, and a whole lot more…there simply hasn’t been any extra time.

Look forward to seeing and visiting with you on May 19th in San Antoino!
