Larry Weishuhn, known throughout the hunting world as "Mr. Whitetail" was on August 17, 2007 inducted into the Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. There he joins other outdoor notables such as Ray Scott of BASS, Johnny Morris of Bass Pro/Outdoor World, Hank Parker and select others.
The Texas native started his career as a professional wildlife biologist shortly after graduation from Texas A&M University, actually while still an undergraduate. After being involved in research particularly with white-tailed deer, Larry worked with landowners and hunting groups establishing quality wildlife management programs both as a state employed biologist and then later in the private sector. Over the years he established quality whitetail deer management programs on well over 15,000,000 acres in Texas and numerous other states.
A prolific and an award winning writer, Weishuhn sold his first article in 1970 about Texas' desert bighorn sheep program. During the ensuing years he served on staff with such publications as Deer & Deer Hunting, Whitetail Journal, Shooting Times, Petersen's Hunting, Sports Afield, Los Cazadores, Game Trails, North American Hunter, Sporting Classics and others. As a staff and freelance writer he has authored well over 2,500 feature articles and many more columns. He continues to serve on staff with Sporting Classics, North American Hunter, and Dallas Safari Club's Game Trails.
Larry has authored six books including Trailing the Hunter's Moon which was awarded the prestigious Gold Book of the Year for 2003 by ForeWord Magazine in the Adventure and Recreation category, winning of several hundred other titles. He has contributed chapters to numerous other books.
As a hunter Larry has hunted big game throughout much of the world including in Europe, Africa, South America, New Zealand and throughout North America, mostly with a Thompson/Center single-shot rifle (including for Cape buffalo and grizzly bear) and where legal with a T/C Encore pistol (his favorite hunting firearm) and occasionally with a muzzleloader. Most all his hunts have been written about in publications, but also have been featured on several national television shows such as Hunting the World, One Good Shot, Whitetail Country, Game Trails, North American Hunter, Whitetail Revolution and others where he has served or continues to serve as the host or co-host of the show.
Weishuhn has long served as a featured speaker for the NRA's Great American Hunter's Tour and is in great demand as an after dinner and seminar speaker. He is a Professional Member of the Boone & Crockett Club, a life member of the Dallas Safari Club and is also one of the co-owners of Los Cazadores.
"It is with great pleasure, and with appreciation for his many years of promoting wildlife management, ethical hunting and entertainment while providing us with wildlife and hunting insight that we are induct Larry Weishuhn into the Legends of the Outdoors National Hall of Fame," said Garry Mason, Founder of the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame.
