Los Cazadores - Hunting Headquarters & Deer Contest

NEW LOS CASADORES RULES FOR 2008 HUNTING SEASON
Keeping the Contest in the Contest

The white-tail deer population in Texas has changed dramatically over the years. From an estimated 232,000 in 1938 we now have over 4 million and still growing. More than 600,000 hunters harvest more than 450,000 deer each year yielding an economic impact of around $690 million per year for the state. Why is this important to a deer contest? The Los Cazadores contest has been through the most drastic change in the history of white-tail deer hunting. It is difficult to imagine how much deer hunting has changed since the contest was started in 1985. The Los Cazadores Contest, only preceded by the legendary "Muy Grande" contest in Freer, has been a pioneer in setting the benchmark for trophy hunting in Texas.

The contest was formed to provide a forum for hunters, friends and family to enjoy the thrill of hunting trophy deer in Texas and share their experiences and memories with others. The legendary "Los Cazadores Trophy Jacket" was a symbol of the benchmark set to reward hunters who harvested a deer that grossed 160 Boone & Crockett or higher. In the early years of the contest, this 160 mark was near the top of the leader board. Even the early contest overall winners were not far off this mark. Examples include 1986 George Strickhausen III (180 B&C), 1987 David Abramson (176 B&C), 1988 George Strait (191 B&C), 1989 Doug Coffee (175 B&C) and 1990 Jearl Lewing (182 B&C). The trophy jacket was very hard to achieve and something that was looked upon as a major accomplishment. The Los Cazadores trophy jacket is still highly sought after by hunters and sportsmen from all over the world and is still a great accomplishment. However, since the deer in Texas have changed so dramatically over the years, the number of 160 class deer has increased dramatically. During the last 25 years, the number of Boone & Crockett record book entries (196) from Texas surpassed, by 20 animals, all the entries from 1892-1979 combined. Over the past two seasons, the Los Cazadores contest has seen 400-600 deer that met the 160 mark or higher as well as 21 deer that scored over 200 this past season.

There are many reasons for this drastic increase in the quality of deer. The most dramatic change has been in the education of deer hunters about better management practices. The state has been an active participant in this, and has also provided multiple programs that encourage the conservation and management necessary to improve deer quality. Some of these programs include the Managed Lands Deer Permit; the Trap, Transport and Transplant Permit; and the Deer Management Permit. All of these assist hunters and land owners in their goal of improving the quality of their deer herds.

Tales by Larry WeishuhnTales from Los Cazadores
    by Larry Weishuhn

July in normally a month when I want to be in Africa, pursuing greater kudu, one of the few big game animals I've hunted that I love hunting nearly as much as I do hunting whitetail deer. A sizeable greater kudu, body size about the same as spike bull elk, but with truly magnificant, tall, wide spreading twisting horns over 50 inches or more, his neck swelled due to the annual breeding season is truly a great sight to behold. It's a sight, when seen for the first time will surely take your breath away and cause rapidly increasing pulse rates. I remember the sight of my first wild bull kudu, seen while hunting with Burchell (Frontier) Safaris in the eastern Cape of South Africa. I can't remember suffering a worse case of "buck or kudu fever" as I raised my rifle to shoot. Shaking badly, I jerked the trigger and made a bad shot, the only one made on that sojurn to Africa where I shot many different antelope speices. It took some serious tracking, but I finally got a finishing shot into the bull. Read More...
