Tales From Los Cazadores - December 2008

Article by: Larry Weishuhn

Ah December….Hunting season, specifically whitetail season, has been open now for weeks and even longer in the case of MLDP properties. Life is good, well it could be better if John McCain has won the presidental election. But that aside, it's December and bucks will shortly be "coming to horn". The rut will shortly follow. December is my favorite time of the year in South Texas.

Based on the bucks I've seen on our website, we're off to a great year with promises of even bigger bucks once we head toward the rut. I've spent the last nearly 7 weeks hunting numerous states from Pennsylvania to Wyoming. I've been fortunate, the only state I didn't shoot a buck in was Kentucky, on the Game Trails property. There I saw a 200 class non-typical late one afternoon. But unfortunately I couldn't get my cameraman into position to film the buck, so I didn't take the shot. In other states I fared better on big deer, including taking a typical 12 with 3 inch kicker on one brow that brought the gross score to 200 6/8. The past couple of months also produced for me my best non-typical an 18 point that grossed 193 and some change. We were able to get both buck on film for my "Winchester World of Whitetail with Larry Weishuhn", produced by Orion Multimedia and which appears on the Versus network. To put it quite frankly, this fall has been our best filming of whitetail ever.

Now it's good to be home in South Texas, where we'll start hunting for the show on December 4 on a ranch just south of Hondo, then on to a ranch between Pearsall and Uvalde, and then on to the same ranch where last year SHE Safari's Pam Zaitz shot her 25 inch wide 10 point with a 9 inch drop. On that same hunt I finally managed to shoot an ancient 10 point with about a 2 inch drop that scored about 40 points less than the buck I took. But on that hunt I saw a couple of monstrous bucks farther away than I really cared to take a shot at with my Encore pistol…which equates to over 400 yards. So, this year when I head back to hunt with Walt Isenhour (Lone Star Outfitter) on that same ranch, I'll not only have my Encore pistol, but also my T/C Icon .300 Win Mag. Thus, whatever the shot calls for, I'll be ready.

There seems to be something about whenever there is a pretty lady in the same camp I am, they tend to take bigger bucks than I do, no matter how hard I hunt. I hope to change that the next time there is a lady in camp… so please… whoever you might be, be forewarned. Don't get me wrong. I love seeing ladies in hunting camps and to me half the hunting license each year should be sold to girls and women, and the other half to the male segment of the human population.

I have learned a few things about hunting with ladies in the past. Put a monstrous whitetail in front of a man, and chanes are he will experience a huge dose of "buck fever", total nervousness. Put that same big buck in front of a lady and as you point out the buck, she'll say, "That one, the one with the really pretty and big antlers?" Nodded yes she will shoulder her rifle or hoist her bow, take deadly aim and cleanly kill said buck, and not show any excitement until walking up toward the downed monstrous buck. What does that tell me? Women are natural born killers!
That's one of the reasons back when I was guiding hunters whenever there was a lady in camp, I made certain I would be her guide.
We're very fortunate in that we have a considerable number of women hunters entered in our Los Cazadores Deer Contest. However, I wish we had even more.

If you have not been by our Los Cazadores store lately, I'd like to personally invite you to come by to visit. Christmas is just around the corner and we've got a great supply of "perfect" gifts for the hunters in your family, male and female. If you can't make it by the store before Christmas, don't overlook our on-line store here on the website.

I'm packed and ready to go. The bucks should be coming to horns and I can't wait to get into the brush. So I'll take this opportunity to wish all of you the very Merriest of Christmases! May all your Christmas wished come true, and all your trails and tales be happy ones.
